Custom zirconia dental veneers for a natural-looking smile by Rivfor Dental Lab

Zirconia Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth, transforming their color, shape, size, and alignment. They are one of the most popular cosmetic dental restorations for achieving a flawless smile. At Rivfor Dental Lab, we use CAD/CAM precision milling to create zirconia veneers that combine exceptional strength with natural-looking aesthetics.

Types of Zirconia Veneers

Traditional Veneers

The most common type, traditional veneers require a thin layer of enamel to be removed before bonding. This allows the veneer to sit flush with surrounding teeth for a seamless, natural-looking result.

Minimal-Prep Veneers

Minimal-prep veneers require only a small amount of enamel reduction, preserving more of the natural tooth structure. They are ideal for patients with minor cosmetic concerns such as slight discoloration or small gaps.

No-Prep Veneers

No-prep veneers are bonded directly to the tooth surface without removing any enamel. This fully reversible option is the most conservative approach, perfect for patients seeking cosmetic improvement with zero tooth alteration.

Smile Design and Digital Workflow

Veneer cases demand the highest level of esthetic precision, and our digital workflow is built to deliver exactly that. When you submit a veneer case, we recommend including a full-arch digital scan, intraoral photos showing the patient's current smile at rest and in full smile, and any diagnostic wax-up or digital smile design (DSD) references.

Our CAD team designs each veneer individually, paying close attention to symmetry, incisal edge position, gingival margin alignment, and surface texture. We use the digital model to verify that each veneer's thickness meets the minimum requirement for the selected material while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.

For multi-unit veneer cases (typically 6–10 units), we design the full set together to ensure consistent proportions and shade graduation across the smile zone. After milling, each veneer is finished with detailed characterization — staining for natural shade depth and surface glazing for lifelike light reflection.

Material Selection for Veneers

Veneers are primarily an esthetic restoration, so material selection focuses on translucency and natural appearance:

Super Translucent Multilayer Zirconia (850 MPa, 50% translucency) — Our first choice for veneer cases. The high translucency allows light to pass through the restoration naturally, closely mimicking the optical properties of enamel. The multilayer shade gradient produces a smooth transition from cervical warmth to incisal translucency without manual layering. Available in 16 VITA Classical and 3 Bleach shades.

HT Multilayer Zirconia (1,250 MPa, 45% translucency) — Recommended when the patient has parafunctional habits like bruxism, or when the veneers need to mask significant discoloration from the prepared tooth underneath. The slightly lower translucency means more masking ability, while the higher strength adds durability.

Both materials are milled as monolithic veneers with no porcelain overlay, eliminating chipping risk — a significant advantage over traditional porcelain veneers, especially for patients with bruxism or heavy occlusal function.

Preparation Requirements by Veneer Type

Each veneer type has specific preparation requirements that directly affect the quality of the final restoration:

Traditional veneers require 0.3–0.5 mm of labial reduction with a well-defined chamfer margin at or slightly subgingival. Incisal reduction of 1.0–1.5 mm allows for natural incisal edge translucency. This type gives the technician the most control over shade, contour, and surface characterization.

Minimal-prep veneers require approximately 0.2–0.3 mm of reduction — often achieved with light enamel recontouring rather than full preparation. These work best for patients with minor cosmetic concerns like slight discoloration, small gaps, or minor alignment issues where the existing tooth position is acceptable.

No-prep veneers are bonded directly to unprepared enamel. They are the most conservative option, but are only suitable when there is adequate space for the veneer thickness without creating overcontour. We recommend no-prep veneers for cases involving closing diastemas or adding length to short or worn teeth.

For all veneer cases, clear margin definition in the scan or impression is critical. We recommend a single-cord retraction technique for veneer preparations to ensure the margin is captured accurately.

Zirconia vs Porcelain Veneers

Traditional feldspathic porcelain veneers have long been the gold standard for esthetic dentistry, but zirconia veneers offer practical advantages that many practices find compelling. Zirconia veneers are significantly stronger (850+ MPa vs approximately 120 MPa for feldspathic porcelain), making them far more resistant to fracture during try-in, bonding, and long-term function.

Zirconia veneers are CAD/CAM milled rather than hand-layered, which means more consistent thickness, more predictable fit, and faster lab turnaround. While feldspathic porcelain offers marginally higher translucency, the latest super translucent multilayer zirconia has narrowed that gap considerably, delivering results that satisfy even the most esthetically demanding cases.

Key Features

Natural Aesthetics

Zirconia veneers are crafted to match the color, shape, and translucency of natural teeth, creating a seamless, lifelike smile transformation.

Superior Durability

With flexural strength far exceeding traditional porcelain, zirconia veneers resist chipping and cracking for long-lasting results.

Stain Resistance

Zirconia's non-porous surface resists staining from coffee, tea, wine, and other common culprits, keeping veneers bright over time.

Conservative Preparation

Depending on the type chosen, zirconia veneers require minimal to no tooth reduction, preserving healthy enamel.
